- No single trip outside the U.S. lasted more than 6 months
- You can read, write, and speak basic English

CHECK MY ELIGIBILITY — $49DOCUMENTS FOR INDIAN IMMIGRANTS
Every N-400 applicant needs the same core documents, but Indian immigrants should pay special attention to:
NEW JERSEY PROCESSING TIMES AND FIELD OFFICE
New Jersey shares the Newark USCIS field office which handles overflow from the New York metro area. Processing times mirror NYC at 12–18 months.
New Jersey has over 2.2 million immigrants. Hudson County, Essex County, and Bergen County have major immigrant communities — particularly Dominican, Indian, and Latin American populations.
Track your case: Once you file, use your receipt number to check your case status at uscis.gov/case-status. Create a USCIS online account at myaccount.uscis.gov to receive automatic updates.
WHERE TO MAIL YOUR N-400 FROM NEW JERSEY
Indian immigrants living in New Jersey file their N-400 at the Elgin Lockbox.
Important: Filing addresses change periodically. Always verify the current address at uscis.gov before mailing your application.
COMMON MISTAKES FOR INDIAN APPLICANTS
TRAVEL HISTORY
Indian immigrants in the tech sector often travel internationally for work. Each trip is counted individually. Business travel does not exempt you from continuous residence requirements — document your return dates carefully.
BACKGROUND AND MORAL CHARACTER
USCIS will review your immigration history thoroughly. If you have maintained H-1B or other work visa status before your green card, make sure your tax filings are consistent with your work history.
DOCUMENT TRANSLATION
All documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. The translator must certify in writing that they are competent to translate from Hindi to English and that the translation is accurate. USCIS does not accept machine translations.
ANSWERING EVERY QUESTION
Never leave any question on the N-400 blank. If a question does not apply to you, write "N/A." Blank fields can cause USCIS to request additional information, delaying your case by months.
AVOID THESE MISTAKES WITH AI GUIDANCE
LEGALIAI's form walkthrough explains every N-400 question in Hindi with examples, common mistakes, and AI feedback on your specific answers.
